What Day does God Rest Saturday or Sunday?

Sunday is not the Sabbath day at all and, The Almighty's Sabbath, according to His unalterable Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11, Matthew 5:17-18) is the seventh day of the week, the day commonly known as Saturday.   You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and you will not find a single verse authorizing the observance of Sunday.   The true weekly Sabbath of Yahweh, the Almighty God of Israel was, is, and ever will be, the seventh day of the week.

 

Thus the arguments rage back and forth across the globe and are even now stirring the minds of many in this area.   The researchers trust that this article will settle the matter for you once and for all, and prepare the world for the days ahead when this very issue concerning the Almighty's Sabbath becomes a deciding point for all the inhabitants of the earth. Before presenting the answer it is obvious that the bible should first settle the issue of whether or not a Sabbath day exists.   In other words, does the Almighty still want mankind to observe a Sabbath day - or are all the days of the week alike?

 

The answer to that question is: Yahweh's Sabbath still exists and He most certainly wants people to observe it.   The following verses will prove that the Sabbath commandment was not done away with at the cross, but is still on the statute books of heaven.

 

The First Proof Text is: Mathew 24:20 But pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rest on the seventh day from all his work which he had made and God blessed the Seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested all his work which God created and made.  (Genesis 2:2-3). Which day is the Sabbath?

 

The seventh day is the Sabbath of the lord thy God. Exodus 20:10 And when

 

the Sabbath was past very early in the morning the first day of the week, they

 

came unto the sepulchre. (Mark 16:1,2). Was the seventh day changed?

 

God's law is good and a blessing.  "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good."  (Romans 7:12).  James 1:25 says,
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Jesus said "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.  Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."  (Matthew 5:18-19). What would Jesus do?    In John 15:10 Jesus said "I have kept my father's commandments" and we can also find from scripture that Jesus attended church on the Sabbath day.   "And he came to  Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. (Luke 4:16).

 

What did the Apostles do?

 

"And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures."  Acts 17:2. "Paul and his company ... went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down. (Acts 13:13, 14) "And on the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. Acts 16:13.  "And he [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks" (Acts 18:4). 
Did the Gentiles also worship on Sabbath?  

 

God commanded it: "Blessed is the man ... that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it.  "Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, ... every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. (Isaiah 56:2, 6, 7).The apostles taught it: "And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God   (Acts 13:42, 44).   And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks (Acts 18:4).

 

 

Sunday Adopted for Political Reasons in Postapostolic Times

 

History reveals that it was because of political and social pressures that the Sabbath was gradually abandoned for Sunday- long after the time of the Apostles.   Severe anti-Jewish attitudes developed in the Roman world during the first and second centuries.   As acts of repression, the Romans outlawed circumcision, sacrificing, Sabbathkeeping, and other Jewish practices.   Consequently, Christians, particularly at Rome, found it expedient to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the Jews, to demonstrate to the Romans that they were not Jewish.  One way they did this was to work on the Sabbath.  Sunday, which was already used by many Romans as a holiday, was a convenient substitute.  For a detailed account of this substitution, see the book From Sabbath to Sunday by Samuele Bacchiocchi (Gregorian Pontifical University Press, 1974).

 

When  Constantine officially recognized Christianity in the fourth century, he put the power of the empire behind Sunday observance.   In the centuries that followed, the first day of the week became so firmly entrenched as the "Christian Sabbath" that even Protestant reformers could not dislodge it, though they claimed their authority from the

 

Bible and Bible only (Bible light.net/notsun.htm).

 

Sunday observance was adopted for the sake of political expedience and is based solely on church tradition.   The seventh-day Sabbath, on the other hand, is rooted firmly in the authority of God's Word!   Which is your source of authority?

 

The Gregorian Calendar Reform 

 

Sometimes people will say the calendar reform in the Middle Ages must have altered the weekdays as we know them, so we cannot be sure which day is the seventh day.   Again people that think this have not researched the issue.

 

Pope Gregory XIII initiated the calendar reform of 1582 because under the calendar established by Julius Caesar, the date of the vernal equinox had moved from March 21st in 325 A.D. to March 11th in 1582.   This was due to the fact that the Julian calendar added a leap day every 4 years, without exception, and this resulted in adding too many days than required for a stable solar calendar.   The Julian calendar had commenced the 1st of January of the 46th year before the birth of Christ (the 708th from the foundation of  Rome), and by 1582 the calendar had drifted earlier by 10 days.  This error was important to the Catholic church because under the Julian calendar, the date of Easter was gradually creeping farther and farther (earlier and earlier) away from the time of year set by the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., when the equinox fell about March 21st.

 

To correct this perceived Easter problem, Pope Gregory XIII (Inter Gravissimas) returned the Spring equinox to March 21st by decreeing that Thursday, October 4th, 1582, would be followed not by the 5th, but by Friday, October 15th.   He jumped the calendar 10 days numerically, but did not change the weekly cycle of days.   Roman Catholics then observed Easter on the first Sunday after the full moon occurring after the Spring Equinox. So that this correction would be maintained, the Pope then decreed that leap years would occur only when the year was divisible by four, and only the centennial years that were divisible by 400 would be leap years.   During a leap year, one day is added to the month of February (the 29th), as a correction.  This method of calendar keeping was gradually adopted across Europe, and the world, and is nearly universal today.

 

Englanddid not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752.   By that time, eleven days had been gained so Wednesday, September 2, was followed by Thursday, September 14.   The eleven days were skipped, but the weekly cycle of days, Sunday through Saturday, remained unchanged throughout the Middle Ages.   (The French Revolution was a notable exception, when for a period of 14 years (1792-1806) a ten-day week was adopted, the tenth day being the day of rest).

 

Inquiries made in 1932 to the United States Naval Observatory, in Washington D.C., and the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London, England, have also confirmed that the weekly cycle of 7 days as observed today has not been altered, and remains as it has been since before the time of Christ.

 

So both history and the Bible make it quite clear that Sunday is the first day of the week and Saturday is indeed the seventh day, which has been kept by the Jews for millennia, even to the present day.   The true seventh-day Sabbath of God has not been lost.   Our Saturday is the same day of the week today as the seventh-day Sabbath of creation.

 

For 25 years Father Enright offers $1,000 for a bible verse commanding Sunday observance:

 

(Extracts from a lecture delivered by Father Enright at   Harlan,  Iowa, December 15, 1889.  Reported by the Harlan American).  The attendance at the Catholic Church on Sunday evening was unusually large, many being unable to gain admittance.  The subject treated on that evening was "The Power and Authority of the Catholic Church.  Father Enright claimed that the authority and existence of his church antedated that of the Bible.  His remarks upon Sunday observance created something of a sensation.  He said:   My brethren, look about you upon the various wrangling sects and denominations.  Show me one that claims or possesses the power to make laws binding on the conscience.  There is but one on the face of the earth the Catholic Church that has the power upon the conscience, binding before God, binding under pain of hell fire.  Take, for instance, the day we celebrate Sunday.  What right have the Protestant churches to observe that day?  None whatsoever. They say it is to obey the commandment, "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy."  But Sunday is not the Sabbath according to the Bible and the record of time.  Everyone knows that Sunday is the first day of the week, while Saturday is the seventh day, and the Sabbath, the day consecrated as a day of rest.  It is so recognized in all civilized nations.  I have repeatedly offered $1,000 to anyone who will furnish any proof from the Bible that Sunday is the day we are bound to keep, and no one has called for the money.  If any person in this city will show me any    scripture for it, I will tomorrow evening publicly acknowledge it and thank him for it.  It was the Holy Catholic Church that changed the day of rest from Saturday to Sunday, the first day of the week.  And it not only compelled all to keep Sunday, but at the Council of Laodicea, A. D. 364 anathematized those who kept the Sabbath and urged all persons to labor on the seventh day under the penalty of anathema.

 

�Which church does the whole civilized world obey?  Protestants call us every horrible name they can think of  AntiChrist, the scarlet colored   beast, Babylon, etc., and at the same time profess great reverence for the Bible, and yet by their solemn act of keeping Sunday, they acknowledge the power of the Catholic Church.     The Bible says: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy."  But the Catholic Church says, "No, keep the first day of the week and the whole world bows in obedience (The Holland, Michigan, Evening Sentinel, Friday, June 11th, 1976, page 7, quoting the Industrial American, of Harlan, Iowa, December 19, 1889).
